Why Buy a Skutt Kiln?

A reputation for quality. When founders R.W. and Neil Skutt introduced the first multi-side electric kiln back in 1953, we revolutionized the industry. To this day, we remain the industry standard and the Skutt name as earned an unparalleled reputation for quality and customer satisfaction. Users agree. Skutt kilns are in use today by ceramists, potters, porcelain artists, doll makers, jewelers and glass artists around the world. They are the favorite of studios, schools and individual artists.

Josh De Weese, Resident Director of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena Montana, says, "We've had Skutt electric kilns for as long as I can remember. We use them for a wide range of glaze and bisque firing. The Skutt kilns get a lot of use from our resident artists and students. They stand up to it well. As careful as we are, there is always the normal wear and tear. Fortunately Skutt modular kilns are easy to maintain. And the firing controls on both the Manual and Automatic models do their job well."

Ron Linn, Ceramics Instructor at David Douglas High School in Portland, Oregon
recently chose the Skutt 1227 with the Skutt EnviroVent and KilnMaster controller. He says, "In shopping for the new school kiln, I wanted to make sure that the district got quality, long life and value for their money. I have 150 students in my program and our Skutt 1227 has been well used. We consistently get good results. I added the EnviroVent to eliminate any health concerns, but we also find it improves firing results, especially on mixed loads with many different glaze colors."

About Skutt nomenclature. Skutt kiln designations were developed to tell you about the kiln. The prefix KS indicates a manually operated kiln with a Dawson Kiln-Sitter installed. The prefix KM indicates an automatic kiln with a KilnMaster installed. The first number is the number of sides and the next numbers indicate the firing chamber height of the base model, that is, a 1227 has 12 sides and is 27" deep. P denotes kilns designed for Cone 8 porcelain firing. 30A indicates a kiln that operates on a 30 Amp breaker. WR indicates a permanent Wired Ring and BR indicates a removable Blank Ring. "-3" designations kilns with energy-saving 3" firebrick.

Skutt Kiln Features

Energy saving brick. Most Skutt Kilns offer 3" firebrick as an option or standard to provide additional insulation and energy savings. We use only the highest quality firebrick, carefully cut and grooved for precise assembly. We continue to offer replacement parts, including firebrick, so you can get decades of kiln use.

Modular design. We were the first to offer detachable sections, which makes kilns easier to move through standard doorways and stairways. One person can move and set up most models. Repairs are much easier. Many models allow you to increase capacity with a Blank Ring. And you can stack a kiln around large work.

Manual models. Kilns in the Skutt Manual line come with the Dawson Kiln-Sitter as standard equipment. For those who prefer manual firing, the Kiln-Sitter is the proven standard of quality. Limit Timers and Pyrometers are available as options on Kiln-Sitter equipped kilns as extra insurance against over firing.

Electronic controls. Skutt offers two ways to control your kiln electronically. The Skutt automatic kilns feature the Skutt KilnMaster Controller built in. You can fire by Cone equivalent, or by programmed Ramp/Hold sequence. The Wall Mounted KilnMaster can control manual kilns.

Long life slabs. The lid and bottom slab on Skutt kilns are reversible. After years of use, or in case of damage, simply turn the lid or bottom slab over and use the other side. Since 1953, our philosophy has been to produce the best kiln possible. Many of our kilns have been in use for thirty years with only routine maintenance.

Quality Materials. Skutt uses only the highest quality Kanthal A-1 elements, electrical components, bricks, hardware and stainless steel. Every switch is tested individually before it is installed, and ever kiln is tested and thoroughly inspected before it is shipped. The result is a kiln that can withstand regular high firings.

The EnviroVent. This Skutt kiln ventilation system creates a fresher room environment and a consistent kiln environment. It removes fumes, odors and vapors from kilns, while improving firing results. The EnviroVent creates a downdraft effect, which greatly improves temperature uniformity, giving cleaner colors in mixed loads.

Broad line, many options. Skutt offers an extensive line with the flexibility to meet your needs, including larger models available in 208 and 240V, three phase power available for 1227 and 1027 models, furniture kits for each kiln, pyrometer and limit timer available for manual models, and blank rings available for manual models.

Two year warranty. Because our standards are high, Skutt can afford to offer the best warranty in the business - two years parts and labor on every kiln in our line, even Cone 10 kilns. And the Skutt warranty is backed by an extensive network of distributors who can help you with any problem. We take real pride in our product support.
