The Wizard of Clay was started in 1977 by Jim Kozlowski, when after a 12 year teaching career he began making pottery full time in the basement of his upstate NY suburban home. In the summer of 1979 he and his wife Lois purchased 15 acres in the Bristol Hills south of Rochester, and Jim built a series of geodesic domes to house the growing business.
During the 1980's Jim and Lois sold their pottery at craft fairs in the Northeast, raised 2 children, and developed the dome complex to include a retail outlet store. In 1991 they put away the traveling displays, and now sell all their wares from the workshop/outlet location. The store and workshop are open to the public 361 days a year and attract visitors from around the world.
In 1995 Jamie joined the family business, and currently works with his father. The two potters throw all the pieces, using more than 100,000 pounds of clay a year.
The variety of products and glazes is one of the special features of the Pottery.
Functional and decorative pieces of high-fired stoneware are for sale in the outlet store. Oil lamps, electric lamps, dinnerware, casseroles, serving pieces, bowls, candle holders, planters, goblets, steins, jars, pie plates, pitchers, and more, are decorated with impressions of local foliage, in the pottery's trademarked Bristoleaf designs. The inventory also includes items finished with ash glazes and crystalline glazes. |
