Oregon Potters Association Studio Tour

Tour studios of Oregon potters and ceramic artists. See how they make their work

You are invited to visit the studios of Portland-area potters and ceramic artists. Artists in the Portland area will have their studios open on the Saturday afternoon following NCECA. Artists farther out of town will be open on Sunday or on both days.

The following studios will be open Saturday, March 11 from noon to 5pm:

For 28 years, this studio has been an artists' cooperative space. Ten artists currently work here, half of them in clay. Their storefront gallery will feature an exhibition by Ray Grimm, one of the most influential teachers and artists in clay in the Northwest. Ray brought ceramics to Oregon and set up one of the first glass studios on the west coast.

From downtown Portland: Take W Burnside St west. Turn right on NW 23 rd , go about 20 blocks and turn left on NW Thurman.

This custom built studio has a gas kiln and a newly built (Nov. 2005) catenary arch wood kiln.

From Portland: Take I-405 north to Hwy 30 west. Go several miles, pass under the St Johns Bridge, turn left at the light onto Germantown Rd. Go several miles to a four-way stop, turn right on Skyline Rd, go 1.8 miles, turn left on Ash St.

This is a huge urban studio on ½ acre city lot. Gail works at cone 6, making colorful handbuilt and thrown work.

This studio features ceramic tile mosaic work. These mosaics are hand-cut from wet clay slabs and are quite intricate and unusual. Most of this work is for residential installations, some is also commercial or public works commissions.

From downtown Portland: Take NW Broadway north from W Burnside, cross the Broadway Bridge, you will then be on NE Weidler. Turn left (north) onto NE 15 th , then turn left (east) onto NE Fremont. Go 3-4 blocks to the corner of NE 11 th and Fremont.
From the Convention Center: Take NE Grand Ave north from the Convention Center, turn right on NE Weidler, then follow directions above.

At this studio, large scale figurative sculptures employ a variety of construction techniques and assembly methods. This work combines steel and wood in unique ways.

From downtown Portland: Take I-405 north to Hwy 30 west. From Hwy 30 cross the St Johns Bridge, turn left at the first light (Ivanhoe). From Ivanhoe, turn right on St Louis, go about 5 blocks, turn left on Windle, go one block to Trumbull. Look for the rhino head.

This is collective of young, fresh and motivated artists creating contemporary sculpture and functional wares. The work is often confrontational, challenging and sometimes offensive. Engaging, dynamic and never dull.

From the Convention Center: Take NE Grand Ave south. Turn left (east) at Belmont (this is a strange little street under the Morrison Bridge). Turn right (south) on SE 11 th , proceed to SE Division St. The Ford Building is on the southwest corner of the intersection at 11 th and Division.

This studio is the oldest and largest all clay co-operative studio in the Portland area. The sixteen members of the studio work in low fire, mid range, high fire and wood fire.

An enormous urban studio with a gas kiln out in the garden. This studio combines Janet's production work and Jim's unique sculptural work.

From the Convention Center: take Martin Luther King Blvd south, turn left on SE Hawthorne, turn left on SE 46 th , go 3 blocks to Salmon St. You will see the kiln.
From downtown: take SW Madison Street to the Hawthorne Bridge, it will put you on SE Hawthorne Blvd, follow directions above

This studio is a three-story addition onto an old Portland style house. Classes in wheelthrowing and handbuilding are taught in the 20x25 foot middle floor. An urban gas kiln is in a yard crammed full of native, ornamental and edible plants.

From downtown: Take SW Madison, cross the Hawthorne bridge, turn right on SE 11 th , turn left on SE Division, turn right on SE 33 rd , turn left on SE Brooklyn.

A one-person studio in a 1910 vintage building. Thrown and sculptural work, Minnesota flattop kiln. Newly remodeled with efficient swinging displays for test tiles and wall pieces.

Artist Katy McFadden is known for her large sculpture. Her studio is adjacent to a state park and has a large sculpture garden.

From Portland: Take I-5 south, take the Terwilliger exit, veer right onto Terwilliger (toward Lewis and Clark College), bear right on Boones Ferry Rd, take 1 st left on SW 4 th Ave, follow signs to studio.

Jan Edwards is known for both her elegant porcelain and her colorful earthenware work. Her newly rebuilt studio features a passive solar heating system that holds heat in stored clay.

From Portland: Take I-5 south, take Multnomah Blvd exit. Take Multnomah Blvd several blocks, turn right on SW 31 st , turn right on SW Capitol Hwy, go one block, turn right on SW Custer. Go to corner of Custer and 27 th . Enter studio from SW 27 th .

This is the kiln site for Stephen Mickey's Soulgama Anagama, a 20 foot long stepped kiln with a barrel arch. Stephen Mickey, a Minnesota trained potter, works with both his wood kiln and a traditional gas kiln when making dinnerware. He teaches at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon.

From Portland: (45 minute drive) Take I-5 north, pass over the Columbia River. After crossing the river into Vancouver, Washington, take exit #2 (SR 500 east to Orchards). Go east on SR 500 for 5.9 miles. At 503 N (also called 117 th Ave) go north 1.1 miles. At Padden Parkway bear right. Go 2.2 miles to Ward Rd and bear left. Continue on Ward Rd for 5.5 miles (it becomes 182 Ave). Turn right on 184 th St (at Alderbrook sign), go 2.2 miles and turn left on 222 th . Go 0.4 mile and turn left on 224 th Ave. Go to the 3 rd house on the left (at the “Pottery Sale” sign)

“Our kilns are the focus of our studio.” There are two woodfire kilns. One is the newest in the area, built at a workshop by Donovan Palmquist in the week prior to NCECA. It is a Bourry box train kiln with an arch top. The other kiln is a downdraft Bourry box that is used for salt and soda firing.

From Portland: take I-84 east, take exit 16 and go south (right) on 242/Hogan Rd. Pass through Gresham. After you pass the Persimmon Golf Course on the right, turn left at the flashing yellow light. Go 1/3 of a mile to the first house on the left. Park in the driveway or in the circle driveway across the street. DO NOT park on the busy country road.


#20: Portland Saturday Market

Featuring local potters Charlie Piatt, Deborah Shapiro, Theresa Smith, Jim Stevens, Sandra Kvalheim, Alissa Clark, Jim Sloss and more.

Okay, this is not a studio. Saturday Market is the longest running open-air crafts market in the USA. Local crafts are sold and there is an International Food Court. Many local craftspeople make their entire living selling work at Saturday Market.

Located under the west end of the Burnside Bridge, next to the Willamette River. Take the Max light rail train between downtown and the Convention Center, get off at the Skidmore Fountain stop. Saturday Market is open Saturdays 10am-5pm, Sundays 11am-4:30pm.

This custom built studio has both a ceramic studio and a wood shop overlooking a beautiful 1-acre garden with perennials, herbs and roses.

From Portland: Take I-5 north, cross the river into Vancouver, Washington. Take SR-14 east toward Camas. Take the 162 nd exit on your right. Go north on 162 nd , pass Mill Plain. Turn right (east) onto NE 18 th , go ¾ mile. Turn left onto NE 185 th Ave (just past large church on left).

Artist and nursery owner Ginger Steele recently went through a transformation from low fired, highly decorated, work to salt fired stoneware and porcelain. Situated in the middle of a retail nursery, this is a beautiful studio with a salt fired kiln.

Open on Sunday, March 12, 11am-5pm

Directions: take Hwy 26 (Sunset Hwy) west from Portland, exit at exit #57 (North Plains). Turn left at top of ramp onto Glencoe Rd. Travel south on Glencoe Rd to the first big intersection. Turn right onto Zion Church Rd, travel west 1.6 miles. Turn left at flashing yellow light onto Susbauer Rd, travel 2 miles south. Studio is on your right, in the New Leaf Greenhouse.

From Ginger Steele's studio, you can take a beautiful drive through Oregon Wine Country to reach Ruri's kiln. Take Hwy 47 from Cornelius toward McMinnville. When you reach McMinnville, follow signs toward Hwy 18 and the coast. When you reach the town of Sheridan, follow directions below to each of the wood fired kilns.

Visit an ana-nobori kiln, an anagama with an extra chamber, that produces yohen effects. This is one of the newer anagama kilns in the Northwest. The kiln will be unloaded just prior to NCECA so visitors can view not only the kiln but also see how the firing went.

Directions: From Portland (55 miles, about 1 ½ hrs), take I-5 south, exit at the Tigard exit, you will merge onto Hwy 99w. Continue on this road many miles, after passing through Dundee, turn west on Hwy 18 (toward the coast). Turn onto Business Hwy 18 into Sheridan, going through Sheridan, heading toward Willamina. 2 miles after the traffic light, turn north (right) onto Rock Creek Rd. Go up a winding 2 ½ miles, you will see a concrete mailbox stand with the number 18526, turn left into the driveway. When the driveway splits into a “Y”, take the right fork and go all the way to the end of the driveway.
