Getting Around Portland

Portland Is A Grid

If you study the downloadable map below you will notice that Portland is divided East West by the Willamette River and North/South by Burnside Rd. All of the Streets all labeled by which quadrant they are located in. For example NW Couch is located on the West side of the Willamette and North of Burnside Road.

With a few exceptions (there are frontage roads on both sides of the river) all North/South running roads are numbered out from the Willamette River . For example NW 3 rd is located approximately 3 blocks North of the Willamette River and SE 3 rd is located approximately 3 blocks South of the Willamette River .

In the Northwest Region of the city things are made even easier because the East/West roads are listed in alphabetical order working North from Burnside.

Instead of naming the main street through Portland 7 th they named it Broadway. So remember if you are on Broadway you are between 6 th and 8 th . Well it would be if they didn't change the name of 8 th in the NE section to Park. Oh and by the way 9 th is also named Park but it heads in the opposite direction.
